Free Credit Report.com...I think I hear that commercial more than beer commercials. It is all over the TV, and then when I get into my car I hear it on the radio. Who is paying for this commercial, and why are they giving something away for free?  How do they make money offering something for free?

So I did some research and I found some interesting information.  The entity that is paying for that commercial is Experian. Experian is one of the three major credit bureaus and is a Publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

So how does Experian make money by giving away free credit reports.  When signing up for the free service you have to give your credit card information.  In other words, no credit card, no free credit report.  So if you have no credit card, or your credit cards have all been cancelled, you don't qualify.

So I put my credit card number in to see what I would get.  And in fact Experian did give me my Experian credit report. However, to see my reports from the other two bureaus, I had to pay $24.95. Good thing that they already had my credit card info.  I said no thanks and looked at the Experian Report.  It was 38 points higher than the mortgage tri-merged report which is the important report if you want to refinance your house.

The mortgage tri-merged reports are very different from the consumer tri-mergeds. Lenders would never accept the incomplete tri-mergeds the Credit Bureaus sell to consumers, since the quality and data contained in those reports is inadequate.

They may have INCORRECT derogs.

a. Equifax has TWO databases, one for consumers and one for creditors.

b. Credit files from all 3 Credit Reporting Agencies can be split and the creditors get DIFFERENT reports than you get.

So, if you're serious about your credit,  order a copy of your mortgage credit report. This is why the consumer report I got from freeecreditreport.com/Experian differed so much from my Real credit report.
